🎬Top Three Financial Movies

July 22, 2025

When it comes to finance movies, there are a few that stand out—not just for their entertainment value, but for the insight they provide into the financial world. Here are my top three:

1) Margin Call
This one tops the list for me as my personal favorite. Although it's a work of fiction, it's heavily inspired by the events leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. What sets it apart is that it’s one of the rare finance movies that isn’t centered around fraud, which makes it feel more grounded. It captures the tension and urgency of a financial institution on the brink—and does it well.

2) The Big Short
Based on real events and originally sparked by famed investor Michael Burry, this film follows a group of outsiders who saw the housing bubble bursting before anyone else did—and bet against it. It's both wildly entertaining and surprisingly educational. The storytelling style makes complex financial concepts accessible, which is no small feat.

3) Wall Street
It’s hard to talk about finance movies without mentioning this classic. Gordon Gekko’s famous lines—“Greed is good,” anyone?—are still quoted today. While the film delves into the darker side of Wall Street, including unethical trading tactics, it’s undeniably entertaining and iconic. The cautionary tale of Bud Fox still resonates.

I'd love to hear from others—what are your favorite finance movies? Are there any hidden gems I should check out?
