📈 The Week Ahead (May 21st, 2026): Market Insights from HPK Provident Advisors
Markets are marginally higher for the week despite rising Treasury yields and elevated oil prices. The S&P 500 recently pulled back from overbought conditions, which commonly occurs near short-term market tops. That is not always the case, but given the rapid run-up from the lows, I believe a modest pullback is likely.
When managing portfolios, I like to think about the potential catalysts behind the next 5–10% market move. At this point, I believe the case for a significant upside move over the next few months is becoming less likely. Valuations are once again stretched, recent price momentum has been strong, and the lack of broad market participation could make further gains more challenging.
If we receive indications that the war could be resolved, that would certainly serve as a catalyst — particularly for the bond market. Stocks may rally on the news as well, but considering how equities have largely looked past rising oil prices, I think the likelihood of a robust equity rally is lower.
On the downside, it would not take much to trigger a pullback given the market’s recent resilience and elevated valuations. Summer months are typically weaker seasonal periods for equities, especially during a midterm election year. While overall economic growth and corporate earnings still appear healthy, persistent inflation is beginning to shift expectations toward the possibility of future rate hikes rather than cuts.
Overall, I still believe we are in a healthy bull market. However, I am waiting for a further 2–5% pullback before deploying our tactical cash position. In the shortened trading week ahead, the primary data point I will be watching is Thursday’s PCE inflation report, with the headline number expected to come in at 3.9%.
I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend with friends and family. More importantly, let us not forget why we have the day off from work — to remember and honor those who gave their lives to protect our freedom. From all of us at HPK, we sincerely thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
