Before diving into the conversations we often have with clients, it’s important to note that every financial situation is unique. This post is for informational purposes only and should not be considered a personal recommendation.
That said, the 401(k) remains a powerful tool for retirement savings. One of its biggest advantages is automation—contributions are deducted directly from your paycheck, making it an effortless way to invest consistently.
Most employers offer a match up to a certain percentage of your salary. That’s essentially a 100% return on your contribution right out of the gate. If you don’t need those funds for day-to-day expenses, it’s a smart way to boost your retirement nest egg.
For clients who have sufficient discretionary income, we typically recommend contributing at least enough to receive the full employer match.
However, here are a few important considerations before maxing out your 401(k):
1) Know What You’re Invested In
Understand the investments within your 401(k) plan and whether they align with your personal risk tolerance and return expectations. Your time horizon plays a major role here—someone retiring in 30 years should be positioned differently than someone retiring in five.
2) Pre-Tax vs. Roth (After-Tax) Contributions
Some plans give you the option to choose between pre-tax and Roth contributions. If you expect to be in a lower tax bracket in retirement, pre-tax contributions may make more sense. However, our team at HPK Provident believes tax rates are likely to rise in the future. That could strengthen the case for Roth contributions, where you pay taxes now but enjoy tax-free withdrawals later.
3) Don’t Forget About Liquidity
While 401(k)s are excellent retirement vehicles, we also encourage clients to build up more accessible, taxable investment accounts—such as an individual or joint brokerage account. These can be used for emergencies, major purchases, or other goals prior to retirement age, without early withdrawal penalties.
