📈 Market Update: A Pivotal Moment for Stocks and the Economy
We’re at a pivotal point for both the markets and the broader economy. The S&P 500 continues to flirt with its mid-November highs, still sitting below the late-October peak. In technical terms, we’re seeing a pattern of lower highs and lower lows across the recent period. The question now is whether this represents the early stages of a market top or simply some routine weakness within a broader bull market.
Economic data has begun to flow in, though some metrics remain somewhat dated. In the big picture, the consumer still appears resilient—supported by the latest retail sales report and recent earnings announcements. However, manufacturing continues to struggle, as reflected in November’s soft ISM numbers. On the other hand, the services sector saw a welcome uptick, though new orders were slightly weaker than hoped.
The positive takeaway from both reports: prices-paid components continue to trend lower.
Turning to labor, the data remains mixed. Jobless claims came in lower than expected, though the timing raises the possibility of a Thanksgiving-related distortion. Meanwhile, ADP’s report told a more contrarian story, showing a decline of 32,000 jobs—marking the fourth negative reading out of the past six.
Looking ahead, next week’s FOMC meeting is the clear highlight. Consensus points to a hawkish rate cut, and the outlook for next year is growing more uncertain. Inflation remains sticky, and early signs of stress are beginning to appear in the labor market. The key question: will the Fed shift toward a more accommodative stance by mid-year, with a new Fed chair?
