For those of you who have seen my recent posts you may recall that my youngest just graduated from high school this year. To honor her accomplishment, we hosted a party. Towards the end of the festivities, it dawned on me how much hosting a party is like life itself. Here's why.
You spend weeks — sometimes months — preparing. In our case, it was about two months of my wife baking Italian cookies (we had a "Pittsburgh wedding-style" cookie table, of course).
Thinking through every detail. Who to invite. What to serve. How to make it meaningful.
Then the big day comes... and it goes by so quickly.
You don’t get to see everyone for as long as you’d like.
Some guests leave early, others you only catch in passing.
And often, the people you love the most — the ones you see all the time — you assume you’ll have time for later. But the night slips away, and you realize you barely spoke.
Life is like that too. We plan to spend lots of time with everyone who is attending our life party. But sometimes we take for granted the people we’re closest to, thinking we’ll have more time.
But it seems time moves faster and faster every year —and we don’t always get that chance.
And just like a party, even after life’s big celebration ends,
there’s still work to be done. Details to wrap up, loved ones to care for, and wishes to honor.
And that is why thoughtful planning matters, for a party and certainly for life. To make the most of every moment — and to make sure your legacy lasts long after the celebration ends.
