In Life, Sometimes a Tree Falls on your Fence

October 14, 2025

When the Unexpected Happens—In Your Yard and in the Market

Life brings all kinds of surprises—hopefully more good than bad. But every now and then, you wake up to something like a tree crashing down on your newly installed fence. It’s a frustrating moment, especially when the damage is already done.

Just like a sudden market correction, by the time it happens, the window for preparation has closed. At that point, all you can do is focus on positioning yourself (or your portfolio) as best as possible for the road ahead.

In the market, that might mean stepping in and buying when things look uncertain—just like writing a check to repair that broken fence. When the rebound eventually comes, it’s often the best time to make sure you’re positioned wisely for the next downturn. In my yard, that doesn’t mean cutting down every tree, but it might mean bringing in an arborist to assess their health and do some strategic trimming.

At HPK Provident Advisors, we take a tactical approach to investing—trimming where needed and staying proactive before the storm hits. If you're interested in learning more about how we manage portfolios with foresight and care, visit our investment philosophy page:
