Next in a miniseries of my daughter graduating from high school and off to college.
Back from Lexington, KY where the University of Kentucky now has two of my greatest treasures – my daughter and my money. For my regular readers (I tell my kids I have a following – please play along) you saw my recent post about why life is like planning a party. I love using analogies - they take something complex and make it simple, relatable, and easy to see from a perspective you might already have. So, here’s another.
Why Going to College 🎓🏛️📚
Is a Lot Like Retiring🌴🏌️♀️📑
Two of life’s biggest transitions often raise the same questions:
• 💰 How will I pay for this new chapter?
• 🕒 How will I use my extra time and new freedom?
• 🤝 Who will be part of my community now?
• 🎨 What new hobbies or interests should I explore?
• 🏠 Where will I live
• 👓 What lifestyle can I realistically maintain?
• 🎯 What long-term goals should I set for myself?
• 🧦What color pajamas will I wear today?
Both college and retirement are about being open to possibilities, embracing change, and managing the anxieties that come with the unknown.
The truth is that most people are only a freshman in college once—and they only retire once. There’s no dress rehearsal.
Luckily, as financial planners, we’ve helped clients through these transitions hundreds of times. Whether it’s a student starting out or a retiree stepping into a new stage of life, the themes are remarkably similar. The key to success in both cases? Planning ahead.
📑If retirement is on your horizon, let’s build your playbook (dare I say your syllabus?) together so you can step into this next chapter with clarity and confidence.
Don’t forget, plans are living documents subject to adjustments along the way. It’s OK to change your major.
