📈 HPK Provident Blog: The Week Ahead

June 09, 2025

Markets edged higher last week, with both equities and bonds grinding upward. However, the economic data came in mixed—particularly from the labor market, which may be signaling early signs of softness.

⚠️ Labor Market: Cracks Starting to Show?

The increase in job openings was a welcome signal, but other labor metrics raised red flags:

  • ADP employment data missed expectations, dragged down by job losses in professional services and education/healthcare.
  • Weekly jobless claims rose for the second week in a row.
  • Several major corporations announced layoffs, potentially linked to ongoing tariff-related uncertainty.

These developments raise a critical question:
Is this just a temporary soft patch, or the beginning of something deeper?
We may find out soon, as non-farm payroll figures could start reflecting this softness in the months ahead.

🔍 Inflation in Focus: Fed Policy at a Crossroads?

Looking ahead, Wednesday’s inflation data is the clear highlight. Expectations call for a year-over-year increase in both headline and core CPI. If inflation picks up while the labor market deteriorates, the Fed could be forced into a tough position.

Will higher prices keep the Fed sidelined?
Or will weaker employment data shift the conversation toward easing?
