HPK Provident Blog: The Week Ahead

May 19, 2025

With most of the major economic data for the month—like jobs and inflation—already in, the week ahead still offers a few key releases that could shape our outlook on the broader economy.

One data point I always keep an eye on is the weekly jobless claims, as they provide one of the most timely reads on the labor market. We'll also be getting a fresh set of PMI numbers, and it's encouraging to see these indicators staying in expansionary territory despite the ongoing uncertainty around tariffs and trade.

On the housing front, it’s no surprise that elevated interest rates continue to put pressure on home sales. It’s been a tough environment for transactions, and this week’s existing and new home sales data should offer more insight into how buyers and sellers are responding.

While the Leading Economic Index (LEI) has historically been a reliable signal for turning points in the economy, its performance over the past few years has been less predictive. Still, I’m curious to see how the latest numbers come in—and whether they support or challenge the current market sentiment.

Let’s take a quick look at what’s on tap:

This Week’s Economic Calendar

📅Today

  • Leading Economic Indicators (April): Expected to decline by 0.65%

📅Thursday

  • Initial Jobless Claims: Last week came in at 229K
  • Preliminary PMI (Manufacturing & Services): Both expected to tick higher, staying in expansionary territory
  • Existing Home Sales: Forecasted at 4.1 million units
  • New Home Sales: Expected to fall by 58K from the previous month
